What Is Hand Winch

Hand winches (also known as manual winches) are powered by manual labour. The operator must crank the handle to wind the wire or rope onto a spool/drum, and this generates enough force to move the load in question.
This type of winch is typically used in construction work and recreational settings such as off-roading to lift or pull machinery, cars and other heavy items.

How Does a Hand Winch Work

A hand winch is a tool for moving a load both horizontally and vertically. The load is connected to the hand winch by a steel cable or a synthetic rope. A winch consists of a crank, a transmission, a drum, a cable, a brake and the housing.

● The crank
Winches can be driven by, for example, an electro – hydraulic motor or by hand. With a hand winch, muscle power must be used to get the drum into a circular motion using a crank (read more about the difference between a hand winch and an electric winch here). Muscle power has a limiting factor, some people are stronger than others but there is a maximum. The average force a person can deliver for a few minutes without becoming severely exhausted is between 10 – 15 kg. In addition, a person can turn about 25 revolutions per minute without becoming severely exhausted. Therefore, all of hand winches have a maximum pendulum force of 15 kg. The average is 12 kg (at maximum load).

● The transmission
Uses with a hand winch, a gear and a worm gear transmission. Read more about the difference between a gear and worm gear winch here.
By engaging two gears of different diameters, a greater torque can be obtained at a lower rotation speed, or vice versa. With a small gear first and then a large gear, a higher moment can be obtained, vice versa a higher speed.
The speed of a winch with a transmission is lower since a transformation takes place. This results in a speed of 0.30 m/min (the speed without gearing was 3 m/min). But this also means that the force a person provides on the pendulum a 10 kg can convert 10 times as much force. This means that a person can then lift a load of 1500 kg (note: this is a theoretical value, which does not take friction and thus force loss into account).

● The speed – without gearing
The rotation speed of a winch without gearing is 1 to 1, since the crank is directly attached to the drum, as in our gear winch TL150. This means that one rotation of the crank produces one rotation of the drum. The speed involved is equal to the circumference of the drum. A person can turn the pendulum an average of 25 times per minute, so this means a speed of about 3 m/min.

● The drum
The drum is a tube or shaft with a flange on each side. On the drum, the cable is secured with a clamp. The drum is positioned in the winch with a shaft that is fixed in the frame (housing) of the winch. The drum is connected to the large sprocket and this is connected to the small sprocket and then this in turn has a connection to the crank. The cable is wound up or down on the drum of the winch with a circular motion, causing the load to move horizontally or vertically, depending on the direction of the cable. When the crank is turned clockwise the load is lifted, counterclockwise it is lowered again.
The drum ensures that the cable is stored neatly. The amount of cable that can be stored on the drum depends on the height of the flanges, the length and diameter of the drum and the diameter of the cable used. We can of course adjust these dimensions so that the desired number of meters of cable can always be used.

How To Use A Hand Winch

Manual winches are a convenient and ideal solution for winching vehicles onto a car trailer. Advantages over a electric winch include.

Simplicity and peace of mind. No need to rely on batteries and motors that can fail at anytime

More control and feel of the vehicle during the loading process

Easy to use, turn the handle and load

Easy to fix if you are in a remote location Manual winches are very useful when loading broken down vehicles onto a car trailer however, it is important that all safety measures are carried out correctly to avoid damage or injury.

Ensure the trailer is safely connected to the towing vehicle prior to operating the elevator to prevent the trailer from rolling away.

Only load the vehicles on and off the trailer on a flat, sealed surface, ensuring the towing vehicle I parked with the handbrake on.

If required, chock the towing vehicles wheels for added safety to prevent any movement.

Inspect the winch cable prior to use to check for excessive ware or fraying.

Turn winch handle anticlockwise to release 1 meter of cable.

To free spool winch cable out to vehicle, Pull winch cable while simultaneously spinning the winch handle anit-clockwise. Be very careful and stay clear of the winch assembly as handle on the winch will spin continuously while the cable unwinding.

Attach the winch cable to approved tow points on the vehicle only.

Keep the winch cable centred and ensure the vehicle is loaded in the centre of the trailer.

Connect winch cable to a tie down point for transit. Wind winch in until moderate tension is applied to the cable.

Never stand behind a vehicle that is being winched onto a car trailer as the cable may fail at any time.

Never stand anywhere near a cable whilst under tension.

Never wear lose clothing when using the winch as it may become caught in the cogs.

What Size Hand Winch Do I Need

Unleashing the beast within your four-wheel drive or off-road vehicle requires more than just raw power and roaring engines. It's all about equipping yourself with the right tools to conquer any challenge that comes your way. And when it comes to winches, size does matter but bigger is not necessarily better.

Vehicle weight: The weight of your vehicle is the fundamental factor in determining winch size. A heavier vehicle demands a more powerful winch to handle the load. Start by checking your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and ensure your winch can handle at least 1.5 times that weight. This provides a safety margin for unforeseen circumstances and heavy recovery situations.

Off-road activities: Consider your off-road activities and the challenges you may encounter. If you frequently traverse treacherous terrains, tackle steep inclines, or conquer deep mud, you'll need a winch with greater pulling power. It's better to have a winch that exceeds your needs than to be stranded without the necessary muscle to get you out of a tight spot.

Multiplier factor: The winch's pulling power can be amplified by using a snatch block or pulley system. These devices increase the effective pulling capacity, allowing you to handle heavier loads. If you plan on using these accessories, take them into account when selecting your winch. Keep in mind that using a snatch block also affects line speed, so consider the trade-off between power and speed based on your specific requirements. Check out snatch block options on our site!

Winch capacity: Winch capacity is typically measured in pounds or kilograms and represents the maximum load the winch can handle. As a general rule of thumb, aim for a winch with a capacity of at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. This ensures sufficient power for most recovery scenarios while accounting for additional factors like incline, traction, and resistance. Using too big of a winch could overload frame capacity and lead to damage to your bumper and/or vehicle.

Line length: The length of the winch line also plays a role in determining the ideal winch size. Longer lines allow for greater flexibility in recovery situations, especially when anchoring points are limited. Something to consider however, is that longer lines increase the risk of cable/line stacking on one side of the drum which can lead to getting stuck, torn line, or breaking your winch. We would recommend line extensions as a great option to have on hand for those scenarios that call for longer lines. Strike a balance between line length and winch size to meet your specific needs.

5 Tips on How to Use Hand Winch Safely

● Inspect the Hand Winch before use.

Before using a hand winch, always perform a thorough inspection to ensure its optimal condition. Check the cable or rope for any signs of fraying, kinks, or damage. Additionally, examine the hooks, attachments, and other components to ensure they are secure and free from defects. If you notice any issues during the inspection, it is vital not to use the hand winch. Instead, have it promptly repaired or replaced by a qualified professional. Regular maintenance and inspections are key to preventing accidents and ensuring the longevity of your hand winch.

● Understand the Weight Capacity.

Every hand winch has a specified weight capacity that should never be exceeded. Exceeding the weight limit can cause the winch to malfunction or fail, leading to hazardous situations. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines or the user manual to determine the maximum weight capacity of your hand winch. By adhering to this limit, you can ensure the safe operation of the winch and avoid unnecessary risks.

● Securely Anchor the Hand Winch.

Proper anchoring is crucial when using a hand winch to prevent instability and potential accidents. Before starting the operation, ensure that the anchor point or structure you’re attaching the winch to is stable and capable of withstanding the force applied during lifting or pulling. Use suitable and robust anchor points that are securely attached to a solid structure, such as a sturdy tree or a heavy-duty mounting bracket. Remember, a stable anchor provides a strong foundation for the hand winch and reduces the risk of unexpected movement or failure.

● Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

When operating a hand winch, always prioritise your safety by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE may include gloves, safety goggles, and sturdy footwear. Gloves offer hand protection and improve your grip on the winch handle. Safety goggles safeguard your eyes from potential flying debris or rope/cable recoil. Sturdy footwear, preferably with reinforced toe caps, provides added protection for your feet in case of accidental drops or impacts. By wearing the necessary PPE, you can minimise the risk of injury during a hand winch operation.

● Follow Proper Hand Winch Operation Techniques.

Familiarise yourself with the correct techniques for operating a hand winch. Use smooth and steady motions when turning the winch handle, avoiding abrupt movements or excessive force. Maintain a firm grip on the handle to ensure control and prevent slippage. If you’re using a heavy-duty hand winch, consider using both hands on the handle to distribute the force evenly. Always maintain clear communication with your team members to coordinate the lifting or pulling process effectively.
