A: Do NOT stand next to your winch when using it. Do NOT winch with your engine off. Do NOT winch with the vehicle(s) in park. Do NOT winch with the hook opening facing down. Do NOT respool the line with your hand near the fairlead. Do NOT use your winch as a tow strap and yank.

A: Although electric winches can consume as much as 150 to 200 amps, they do not run for long periods of time. A day's use might amount to no more than 10 minutes.

A: Keep Your Distance. A good rule of thumb is to stand a further distance away from the winch as the distance of the line. For example, if the line is 15 feet long, then everyone should stand 20-30 feet away from the winch. This ensures that everyone is out of harm's way in case the line was to break.

A: Ensure sheaves are correct for size and type of rope, that fleet angles are not too great, the rope is not twisted and the load is free to move. Check operating handles are secure. Raise the load just clear, halt the lift to ensure the integrity of the brake, slinging arrangement etc.

A: You will need enough Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) in the battery to power both your engine and winch. The battery must have the reserve capacity to supply enough power to the winch. A 12-volt battery rated up to 650 CCA will typically be enough for a 12,000 lb. vehicle which is the general standard for winches.

A: Always keep the cable wrapped around the winch drum a minimum of eight times. If you do not, the cable can come off the drum, releasing the tension immediately and unexpectedly. The resulting sudden shifts in load can cause serious injury or death.

A: Never touch winch rope or hook while under tension or under load. Always stand clear of winch rope and load and keep others away while winching. Never use vehicle to pull load on winch rope. Combined load or shock load can damage, overload and break rope.

A: The original synthetic winch ropes were based on the durable synthetic lines used in the maritime and fishing industries. Made from hi-tech polyethylene, synthetic rope is considerably safer than steel cable and is now mandatory in most major sanctioned off-road events.

A: With a clean winch you can start on the lubrication. Grease the main axle of the winch and the gears. Less is more here, you don't want to cake on the grease, just a light coat will do. The roller bearings need a light coat too, just a sheen on them actually.

A: Turns out it's possible, not just in theory, but in practice. You'll need a long winch extension rope, around 40m is good, and at least three pulleys.
